Council's Infrastructure Unit is responsible for construction and on-going maintenance works to ensure safe roads and a good level of service provided to motorists and residents alike. From time to time minor works are required to be undertaken by residents and/or contractors. These works may include:
• Crossover construction or alteration
• Making holes or excavations for both infrastructure works and for non infrastructure works
• Connecting to or altering a council drain
• Water Tapping
• Sewer connection
• Reinstating a hole or excavation
Who is responsible for the construction of a vehicle crossing ?
The property owner is responsible for construction, maintenance and repair of a vehicle crossing to enable a person to have access to private land. For further information refer to Local Government Act Schedule 10.12.
Property owners are responsible to ensure these crossings are constructed and maintained in a safe and operational condition at all times and to the satisfaction of Council.
Crossover construction must comply with Mount Alexander Shire Council vehicle crossing standard drawings (available from the Infrastructure department).
You or your contractor must have public liability insurance which allows work within the road reserve.
What do I need from my contractor?
Prior to obtaining your permit to carry out minor works you must first obtain a copy of your contractors’ Public liability Certificate of Currency, this must be produced with your application. The following details should appear on the contractors’ public liability certificate:
• Contractors name and address
• Name of contractors insurance company
• Policy number and expiry date
• Amount covered under policy (a minimum $10,000,000 is required).
