Council provides a weekly domestic waste (garbage) collection service and a fortnightly recycling service, collecting recyclable materials such as paper, steel, aluminium, glass and plastics, in designated collection areas across the Shire.

Garbage bins:
Your waste (garbage) will be collected in a green 140 litre MGB (Mobile Garbage Bin). The current fee is $476 per year charged with your rates. Council also offers an alternative waste (garbage) 80 litre MGB which costs $346 per year.
You can place the following materials in your garbage bin:
- Household garbage
- Food waste, meat, fish, poultry, scraps and bones
- Nappies
- Polystyrene or foam trays
- Broken glassware and crockery
- Broken mirrors, incandescent light bulbs and glass.
DO NOT place any of the following items in your garbage bin:
- Garden clippings, lawn clippings or weeds
- Syringes
- Gas bottles
- Paints or solvents
- Bricks, rubble, timber or tiles
- Pesticides or chemicals
- Recyclables.
The majority of these items can be taken to the Castlemaine Landfill or the Maldon Transfer Station. Recyclables should be placed in the recycling bin. Syringes can be disposed of at the Civic Centre.
Recycling bins:
Your recycling will be collected in a green and yellow 240 litre MGB. Council also offers an alternative green and gold 140 litre MGB. The recycling cost is included in the garbage charge and does not vary regardless of the size of recycling bin selected.
You can place the following materials in your recycling bin:
- Steel cans including aerosol cans, aluminium cans, aluminium foil and pie trays
- Milk, juice and egg cartons
- Cardboard boxes, cereal and food boxes
- Telephone books, school and office papers, envelopes, junk mail, newspapers and magazines
- Glass bottles and jars (including lids)
- Plastic containers and bottles with the codes 1 - 7.
DO NOT place any of the following items in your recycling bin:
- Plastic wrap, bags or packaging
- Syringes
- Food waste
- Clothing and material
- Polystyrene or foam trays
- Household garbage
- Garden or lawn clippings
- Broken glass, mirror or ceramics
- Light globes
- Nappies
- Gas bottles.
NOTE: If you place the incorrect items in either your garbage or your recycling bin, it will not be collected by the garbage and recycling trucks.
The garbage and recycling bins are numbered and registered to your property. They have been supplied by Council and remain the property of Council and are not transferable. Only bins provided by the Council will be collected.
Bin size changes:
If you would like to exchange your garbage or recycling bin for a smaller bin please complete the Upsize / Downsize form, click here, which can be downloaded from the list below, collected from the Civic Centre, or posted to you. If you require the form to be posted to you, please contact the Council on 5471 1700.
Stolen or lost bins:
If your bin has been stolen or gone missing, please complete the 'Replacement - Stolen/Missing Form’, which can be downloaded from the list below, or available from the Civic Centre. If you require the form to be posted to you, please contact Council Customer Service on 5471 1700. Please note: The statutory declaration form attached must be completed.
Damaged bins:
If your bin has been damaged and needs to be repaired, please contact Wheelie Waste Customer Services Team on 1800 999 690.
Missed bins:
If your bin has not been emptied on your normal collection day, please call the Wheelie Waste Customer Service Team on 1800 999 690.
