Animal complaints

Wandering dogs/Stray dogs or cats

To report a wandering dog or to arrange collection of a contained stray dog or cat please contact Council's Local Laws Officers on 5471 1785 during business hours or on 54711700 after hours. Council provides an emergency after hours service. Some time delays may be experienced in the collection of contained stray animals due to emergencies taking priority, for example stock wandering on roads. Council officers will not respond to dog wandering complaints after hours except in exceptional circumstances.

Barking dog complaints

Barking dogs in your neighbourhood can be a source of annoyance. Often dog owners are unaware that their dog is causing a nuisance to the neighbours, as they may not be at home at the time of the barking. It is sometimes an effective solution for you to contact the owner of the dog and make them aware of the problem. Responsible dog owners are generally willing to ensure that their pet does not cause a nuisance and are appreciative of the opportunity to resolve the issue at a local level without the involvement of Council. Council Local Laws Officers can provide advice and literature to the owners of dogs to assist them in attempting to reduce any existing or potential nuisance barking.

If a barking issue persists, it may be necessary for you to complete a “Barking Dog Complaint” form and a noise level log records sheet. For further information please contact Council's Local Laws Officers on 5471 1785.

Dog attacks

Any incidents of dogs rushing at or attacking people or animals should be reported to Council immediately. Details that need to be reported are:
• The date, time and location of the incident
• The description of the offending dog and its location if known
• The injuries sustained as a result of the incident
• Any other relevant details of the incident

To report an attack or rushing incident contact Council's Local Laws Officers on 5471 7185 during business hours or 54711700 after hours.

Cats trespassing

Cats caught on private property may be impounded by Local Laws Officers. If a cat is caught on your property, you may request Council officers impound the cat from your property if the cat is contained at the time. If you experience problems with cats with known owners that trespass frequently, contact the Local Laws Officers to organise a notice of objection to be forwarded to the owners.

Animal neglect/cruelty

All reports of animal cruelty or neglect should be directed to the RSPCA Inspectorate on 9224 2292.
