Cultural heritage protection and heritage advisory service

There are more than thousand Heritage Places in our Shire which are recognised and protected through Heritage Overlays. See the Heritage Schedule list for more details. Heritage places are valuable for their rich history and the stories they hold about people, life and times past.
Heritage Places can be natural environments, buildings or remains of former structures, or cultural landscapes. Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Places are now protected by law.
Mount Alexander Shire employs a Heritage Advisor who visits the Shire one day a month. Our Heritage Advisor can give advice about how best to look after your heritage place or building, whether a planning permit is required or not.
To check if your land has a Heritage Overlay, order a free Planning Property Report.
If your planning permit application involves a parcel of land which has a Heritage Overlay, we recommend you contact our Heritage Advisor before you submit your planning permit application to discuss your plans and seek advice on Heritage requirements. Most planning permit applications are also referred to our Heritage Advisor during the permit process. To make an appointment for a free on-site 30 minute meeting with our Heritage Advisor contact us.
