Council’s Building Services team offers a range of building related services to the community which includes Property Information Requests, Report and Consents, Place of Public Entertainment Occupancy Permits/Siting Consent, and Essential Safety Measures.
We aim to ensure compliance with the Building Act 1993 and Building Regulations 2006 by undertaking proactive inspections of swimming pools, public buildings, and new works, and by responding to queries from the public about building safety.
If you require a building permit you will need to engage a Building Surveyor. You can find a surveyor by using our list of local building surveyors, or by searching the yellow pages.
Property information requests
When property is bought and sold it is necessary for information to be provided from the vendor (seller) to the purchaser. Information is usually sourced from Council by the property owner, a conveyancer, or a solicitor.
Under the Building Regulations 2006 any person may request:
Report and consents
A report and consent is the process for consulting with and obtaining the approval of council when building work may affect assets, infrastructure or amenity of the community. A report and consent may be required in the following situations:
Places of public entertainment (POPES)
An Occupancy Permit and/or Siting Consent may be required to use land or buildings for ‘Public Entertainment’, or to erect a temporary structure such as a marquee, seating stand or stage.
We find that many events are exempt from these requirements, however as the building legislation is complex and there are various limitations, requirements, and exemptions we have developed a Place of Public Entertainment Questionnaire to help us assess each event application and determine which of the above permits are required..
If the questionnaire indicates that an Occupancy Permit or Siting Consent is required then the applications forms are available below:
Application Form Occupancy Permit for a Place of Public Entertainment,
Application Form Temporary Structures
Each application will require payment of a fee with lodgement of the application.
Building permits
Mount Alexander Shire Council has decided to focus on safety and compliance and therefore undertakes building permits only for a small range of situations.
If you require a building permit you will need to engage a Building Surveyor. You can find a surveyor by using our list of local building surveyors, or by searching the yellow pages.
If you have a building permit issued by Council in the past the following forms may be useful to finalise your project, seek approval for changes to your project, or to seek an extension of time to complete your project:
Application Form Amendment to Building Permit
Application Form Extension of Time Building Permit
Application Form Occupancy Permit
Appeals
If you are dissatisfied with the decision of any Building Surveyor, including Council, you may wish to apply to the Building Appeals Board to have the decision reviewed. The matter will be scheduled for a hearing and you will be able to present your case. Application forms and information sheets are available from Victorian Building Authority.
