In January 2009, Victoria experienced an unprecedented heatwave with temperatures being extreme for a number of days with little overnight relief. It is predicted that heatwaves in Victoria will increase in both frequency and intensity.
Even relatively mild heatwaves can cause excess deaths.
Those most at risk are people aged 65 and over (particularly those who live alone with limited mobility), the overweight and obese, pregnant and nursing mothers, people with chronic illness, those with health conditions that impair sweating, and people taking medications that interfere with the body's ability to regulate temperature.
Staying Safe in a Heatwave
Unlike other emergencies, the impact of a heatwave can be greatly reduced by taking simple measures, such as:
-
Limiting physical activity and resting
-
Staying in a cool place
-
Wearing loose, cool clothing
-
Drinking plenty of water
