Land management rate

The Mount Alexander Shire Council is committed to increasing native vegetation cover on public and private land. Under our Environment Strategy we are also committed to supporting landowners understand and appreciate their obligations and responsibilities for land and biodiversity.

The Land Management Rate and the Remnant Conservation Rebate are two of the ways Council supports landowners to make protecting biodiversity and native vegetation easier.

The Land Management Rate (LMR)

  • Aims to improve the management of farm land by providing a discount on Shire rates for land owners who undertake approved land management activities.
  • Applies to private properties within the Shire that: a) were rated as a farm in the 2014/15 financial year and are over 20 hectares (49 acres) in size or b) operate a farm business.
  • Is a 10% discount on the ‘General’ property rate.
  • Is granted to land owners for 12 months if they have satisfactorily undertaken at least one land management activity over the previous 12 months.
  • Covers a range of land management activities, including the control of pest plants and animals, prevention and control of erosion and salinity, whole farm planning and revegetation (with local native species). Other works with demonstrated advantages to land management will also be considered.
  • Does not cover other municipal charges. All program participants are required to pay full municipal charges and, where applicable, waste collection fees.

Land owners wishing to apply for the LMR need to complete an application form and submit it to Council before 6 March 2015. Late applications will not be accepted. Please also note that it is the responsibility of the land owner to apply for the LMR each year.
